O Blues de Chicago Que Estremeceu o Mundo Entre 1958 e 1963

Muddy Waters entrega em You Shook Me: The Chess Masters, Vol. 3 (1958-1963) o Chicago blues elétrico em sua fase de ouro, quando o som saía das singles e ganhava corpo de álbum. 

É o momento em que a voz grave e o groove pesado de Muddy viraram referência absoluta.Nas gravações, Muddy Waters (voz e guitarra) conta com Otis Spann no piano, James Cotton na gaita, Willie Dixon no baixo (e em algumas vozes), Pat Hare e Earl Hooker nas guitarras, Francis Clay e outros na bateria, além de participações de Little Walter e Jimmy Rogers. 

Destaques: “You Shook Me”, com o slide de Earl Hooker respondendo a cada frase de Muddy, “You Need Love” (a base que depois virou “Whole Lotta Love” do Led Zeppelin) e as versões ao vivo de “Got My Mojo Working” do Newport Jazz Festival de 1960: o som é denso, com gaita cortante, piano de Otis Spann balançando o chão e a banda inteira empurrando o ritmo sem freio. 

O disco mistura estúdio e palco, singles e faixas de álbuns clássicos como Muddy Waters Sings Big Bill e At Newport 1960. Uma curiosidade da formação: várias sessões já usavam a técnica de gravar a base primeiro e depois colocar a voz de Muddy por cima, algo novo na época da Chess. “Read Way Back” traz Willie Dixon cantando em segundo plano, um detalhe raro nas sessões de Muddy. 

Esse volume de 2012 reuniu pela primeira vez material inédito, como o instrumental de “Sweet Black Angel” com Earl Hooker, e o show ao vivo de Newport que colocou o blues de Chicago no mapa internacional.

Freddy King – Bossa Nova And Blues: Uma Explosão de Ritmo e Alma!

Lançado em 1963, Bossa Nova And Blues de Freddy King é uma vibrante fusão de blues elétrico com toques sutis de ritmos latinos, mostrando a versatilidade do “Texas Cannonball”. Apesar do título, o álbum é predominantemente blues, com a guitarra afiada de King e sua voz soulful brilhando em faixas como “You’re Barking Up The Wrong Tree” e o instrumental dançante “The Bossa Nova Watusi Twist”. Clássicos como “Someday, After A While” e “The Welfare” entregam emoção crua e grooves cativantes. A banda de apoio, com Sonny Thompson no piano e os saxofonistas Gene Redd e Clifford Scott, adiciona camadas ricas ao som. O título foi uma jogada de marketing de Syd Nathan, da King Records, para capitalizar a febre da bossa nova, mas o álbum mantém o coração no blues.
