Sonny Terry solta o whoopin’ e conta a própria 

história no blues mais puro de 1960

Em 1960, o lendário gaitista Sonny Terry lançou Sonny’s Story pela Prestige/Bluesville, um álbum de blues acústico e folk blues gravado em uma única sessão. No comando estão Sonny Terry (gaita e vocais), ao lado de J.C. Burris (segunda gaita), Sticks McGhee (guitarra) e Belton Evans (bateria). 

Faixas como a título “Sonny’s Story”, o contagiante “I Ain’t Gonna Be Your Dog No More” e o intenso “Pepperheaded Woman” mostram o famoso estilo “whoopin’” de Terry, cheio de gritos, quemados e energia que faz o ouvinte se mexer junto. 

A instrumentação é enxuta e direta: duas gaitas dialogando, guitarra firme e bateria marcada, sem excessos, capturando o blues de raiz com espontaneidade e força. 

Curiosidade da gravação: tudo foi captado em 13 de outubro de 1960 no lendário estúdio Van Gelder, em Englewood Cliffs, Nova Jersey, sob a engenharia de Rudy Van Gelder. A sessão foi supervisionada por Ozzie Cadena e rendeu um dos melhores trabalhos solo de Terry, segundo a crítica da época e reedições posteriores. O álbum destaca o gaitista fora da sombra do parceiro de longa data Brownie McGhee, revelando sua voz e personalidade de forma plena.
