Nina Simone pinta o blues com dor, alma e fogo em 1965

Lançado em outubro de 1965 pela Philips, Pastel Blues é um dos álbuns mais intensos e pessoais de Nina Simone, mergulhando no blues vocal e no jazz com uma pegada intimista, melancólica e espiritual. Longe do big band, o disco prioriza a voz crua e o piano de Nina, criando uma atmosfera de clube noturno sombrio.

Nina Simone brilha ao piano e nos vocais, acompanhada por Al Schackman (guitarra e harmônica), Rudy Stevenson (guitarra e flauta), Lisle Atkinson (baixo) e Bobby Hamilton (bateria), sob produção de Hal Mooney. 

Destaques: “Sinnerman” (mais de 10 minutos de construção gospel explosiva e improvisações hipnóticas) e o arrepiante “Strange Fruit”, com sua entrega dramática e pausas carregadas de tensão. O álbum também traz interpretações marcantes de “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out” e “Be My Husband”, que Nina transforma em algo quase primal, com palmas e voz nua.

Gravado em sessões esparsas em Nova York entre 1964 e 1965, o disco inclui “Be My Husband”, composição do então marido de Nina, Andy Stroud, inspirada em um canto tradicional de campo de trabalho. 

Curiosodade: “Strange Fruit” — clássico anti-linchamento popularizado por Billie Holiday — ganhou aqui uma releitura ainda mais sombria no auge do movimento pelos direitos civis, reforçando o papel de Nina como voz de resistência.
