Kinks gravaram o rock mais britânico e genial de 1969

Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) é o álbum conceitual de rock e pop dos Kinks lançado em 10 de outubro de 1969, um ciclo de canções que narra a vida de um homem comum londrino enfrentando o pós-guerra e o declínio do império.

Com Ray Davies nos vocais, guitarra e teclados, Dave Davies na guitarra solo, John Dalton no baixo (sua estreia definitiva no grupo após a saída de Pete Quaife) e Mick Avory na bateria, o disco explode em faixas como “Victoria”, que abre com pompa e ironia, “Shangri-La”, que sobe do folk inglês para o hard rock em camadas de harpsichord, horns e guitarras, e “Australia”, um jam de quase sete minutos cheio de groove e improvisos. 

A instrumentação mistura rock afiado, baladas nostálgicas e arranjos de cordas e metais de Lew Warburton, sem desperdício, criando uma sonoridade mais muscular e multi-camadas que captura suburbano, guerra e burocracia. 

Curiosidade: as sessões em maio-julho de 1969 nos Pye Studios aconteceram logo após Dalton assumir o baixo de forma permanente, dando ao grupo um novo impulso enquanto Ray produzia e escrevia quase tudo.

As gravações começaram como trilha para uma peça de TV da Granada desenvolvida com o romancista Julian Mitchell, mas o programa foi cancelado por falta de verba, deixando só o disco. O álbum foi aclamado na Rolling Stone como o melhor britânico de 1969, superando em musicalidade até o Tommy do Who.

The Kink Kontroversy: o disco em que The Kinks viraram lenda

Lançado em 26 de novembro de 1965, The Kink Kontroversy é o terceiro álbum de estúdio dos Kinks e marca a transição do rock bruto da invasão britânica para um som mais sofisticado, misturando blues, R&B e pop-rock observacional.

Ray Davies comanda os vocais e guitarras, ao lado de Dave Davies (guitarra e vocais em faixas como “I Am Free”), Pete Quaife no baixo e Mick Avory (e sessão de Clem Cattini) na bateria, com piano de Nicky Hopkins e produção de Shel Talmy. 

Destaques: incluem o opener blues sujo “Milk Cow Blues” (cover de Sleepy John Estes com vocais compartilhados), o hit “Till the End of the Day” (riff poderoso no estilo dos primeiros singles) e a nostálgica “Where Have All the Good Times Gone”. O disco equilibra rockers agressivos com baladas e experimentações leves, como o pastiche calypso de “I’m on an Island”.
